The Host Home model strives to partner community members with young people in need of safe, stable, affirming housing. In partnership with Participants, our region-based case managers provide resource navigation, referrals, and case management guided by the Individualized Service Plan (ISP). Participants identify and pursue goals while hosted in their community, keeping them connected. Hosts are provided with training, resources, and regular check-ins to ensure Participants are supported and given opportunities to thrive.
MatSu: Accepting Host Applications
Becoming a Host is a challenging, fulfilling, and sometimes messy journey that requires stability and compassion. As with any relationship, it is a beautiful experience for all involved, and is also a responsibility that is not for everyone. Participants require stability, support, and resources from their Host, and it is important to have a transparent conversation with us about limitations, expectations, and needs. Ultimately, only you can determine if becoming a host is the right path for you, and we are here to answer any questions you have about the partnership!
Onboarding as a Host with Choosing Our Roots requires several steps, the first of which is the application. From there, we run a federal finger-print background check on all adults in the household, and once cleared, our Host Home Liaison completes a home inspection, and potential Hosts attend trainings on a variety of topics prior to the placement of any Participant.
Hosts are provided with a monthly stipend of $600 per Participant in their home. Each hosted Participant is provided with a monthly stipend of $150. This money can be used however is needed.
We are able to reimburse some basic needs expenses. We ask that Hosts and Participants work with their direct service team to confirm prior to making such purchases.
Hosts are provided with ongoing training to ensure they have the most up-to-date access to resources, knowledge, and skills. If they wish, Hosts can connect with each other to build relationships and share experiences with peers.
Our Host Home Liaison works with Hosts to trouble shoot challenges, build skills, and access resources, and our MatSu Navigator does the same with Participants. This model allows everyone to feel supported, heard, and valued. Hosts are vital to our program, and we strive to provide them with the same level of support we give to our Participants!
