To ensure all LGBTQ+ Alaskan youth and young adults have access to safe homes, supportive communities, and opportunities to thrive.
COR recognizes that no two participants are the same. We take the time to get to know our youth participants so that we can help them select a host home to fit their needs based on their beliefs, values, habits, and lifestyles. Youth participants are engaged in each step of the process to identify and address their needs to grow into confident, competent young adults on their own terms.
Choosing Our Roots was founded by queer Alaskans and youth, for queer Alaskans and youth. Since its inception, queer youth have been at the wheel: developing policy, directing services, and informing decisions that impact its youth participants.
COR’s work is grounded in recognition of the many forms of trauma that disproportionately affect queer persons living in Alaska. COR is committed to empowering survivors and helping youth retain connections to the cultures and communities that shape their identities as they heal and grow, so that the pathway to wellness is not a lonely journey. We believe we heal together.
COR recognizes that putting a roof over someone’s head will allow a person to survive, but that to thrive, one needs a home. COR exists to provide the essential elements of security, support, and caring to youth participants.
Dearest Community,
We do a lot as a small team. Between 6 amazing staff, two regions, and multiple programs, we power through Pride Month every year and then close for the first week of July to rest and recover.
Choosing Our Roots will be CLOSED June 29th-July 7th. This means all messages, emails, inquiry forms, phone calls, and coordination will not be responded to until our return from rest in July. Thank you for your understanding and patience while we take this time.
With Queer Joy and Exhaustion,
Alexandra, Alex, Chami, Laura, Oliver, and Rem
